Black Men of Greater Springfield

Leading the Youth Toward Success Is What We Aim to Do

PROGRAMS AND SERVICES

Our W.E.B Dubois Academy Saturday School has a rich history of more than 20 years.

Our  W.E.B Dubois Summer Program includes connections for summer and other youth employment opportunities.

We have proudly provided more than $125,000  grant funding for more than 30 local programs that serve youth.

The Black Men of Greater Springfield is a private not-for-profit (501c3) organization whose mission is to provide educational, cultural, developmental and citizenship enrichment to minority youth who reside in the greater Springfield, MA community. Our initial activities included historic tours of local, regional and state-wide tours, college preparatory fairs and career fairs. These event were provided for youth from the age of seven to sixteen. These events were also open to parents.

Established in January, 1991, the organization was formed to bring together men of concern from the greater Springfield area, to provide mentoring and educational opportunities to the young men of color from this community.

Over the past 25 years, the BMGS have stayed true to its mission. We have provided/supported such programs and events as:

  • The Umoja Festival
  • The Tip-Off Classic game / youth breakfast
  • Community mini-grants
  • The Amer-I-Can program
  • Career Day / Career Explorations
  • The Youth Robotics program
  • The W.E.B. Academy program
  • The W.E.B. Academy Summer program

In addition to these, we have collaborated with/supported: several other agencies, educational institutions, and community youth programs.

Today, the BMGS continue to live its mission. Our mainstay activity program is the W.E.B. Dubois Academy. Established in the fall of 1997, this program provides educational support and mentoring to area youth on Saturday mornings throughout the school year. The program works with youth between 3rd and 12th grades. Operating out the Springfield Girls Club Family on Acorn St., the program runs from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

The BMGS also provide support to some of the academy’s young men that graduate high school and continue pursuit of higher education. This is done through our scholarship program; and our youth stipends program. (i.e., small stipends are provided to youth who volunteer as counselors at the academy)

Also, summer jobs are provided to these youth at the BMGS’ summer program. (This has also been staff supported through collaboration with Springfield College) The BMGS also continues to deliver the annual Career Day workshops; (In late May of each year) and the Youth Robotics program. (a six-week, on-hands training workshops engaging the youth in robotics activities)

The needs of our children are greater today than they have ever been. It is critical today that the entire community shares the concern of the needs of our youth. Support our future. Support the Black Men of Greater Springfield.
